Interdisciplinary Student Symposium

Theme and Main Topics

THEME AND MAIN TOPICS

Istinye University Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences will hold its 1st Interdisciplinary Student Symposium on "Sustainability in Interdisciplinary Studies" in 16-17 Aralık 2024. The symposium, organized in collaboration with the International Center on Sustainability, will also feature workshops on sustainability themes with the participation of students from various Research Centers within the university. Istinye University students who have integrated their studies and interests with sustainability topics are invited to share their work at the symposium and workshops. The sessions will be conducted in both Turkish and English.
In recent years, the concept of sustainability, which frequently comes up, can be defined as an interdisciplinary concept that encompasses nature and culture, considering the mutual impact between humans and the environment, and includes humans, history, and geography based on the unity of time and space. The widespread adoption of the concept is largely due to the United Nations' 2030 Global Development Goals and the plans prepared by UN member countries to achieve these goals. These development goals are designed to address today's needs by eliminating negative externalities arising from production and consumption relationships and targeting the eradication of inequalities. In this context, Turkey's 12th Development Plan (2024-2028) emphasizes the use of renewable resources in production to maintain natural balance and prevent waste of resources. In consumption, attitudes that will change today's habits, such as reducing waste, along with sharing, reusing, and repairing, are emphasized for the same purposes. All these new forms of consumption actually arise from the pressures on the classic production-consumption relationship caused by the changing interaction between nature and culture over time. Educational institutions have a significant role to play in promoting responsible and conscious resource use. Moreover, protecting nature, safeguarding human values, and ensuring that everyone has equal access to education, health, and other opportunities are necessary for a sustainable life.
Within the scope of its mission at Istinye University's Faculty of Economics, Administration and Social Sciences, it aims to contribute to society by involving its students in efforts focusing on environmental and social responsibility, along with governance, economic, and cultural-based integrated understanding.
Istinye University students can participate in the symposium to gain awareness about sustainability efforts related to their departments and to experience how they can contribute to these areas with an interdisciplinary perspective.
Abstracts submitted to the participation call will be evaluated by the departments and accepted for the symposium. It is recommended that students collaborate with students from different departments.
